QUESTION:

How can I manage anxiety in high-pressure situations?

ANSWER:

That’s easy! Don’t do it. That would be the easiest solution. Wouldn’t it? I can’t imagine anyone (not even professional athletes) being able to fully manage anxiety in pressure situations. I’ve, personally, been in many high-pressure situations. Did I excel every time? Nope. But those situations taught me much more than the situations where I excelled. Whether its sports related or public speaking (as examples), every pressure situation results in lessons learned (if you let those situations teach you). I found that being nervous isn’t a bad thing. It tells me that I care. Now, maybe it’s that I cared not to look like a dope. Or maybe it’s that a cared not to let others down. Regardless, caring is the first step. With caring comes preparation (being prepared helps cut down on the anxiety you may feel). There is nothing wrong with being anxious. The problem lies when that’s all we dwell on. I hate public speaking. I do it (even when I don’t want to), because the more I do it, the less anxious I become. I try and prepare (which helps a lot!). Just like handling stress. Don’t overthink it. That will paralyze your ability to clear your mind and work out the anxiety you feel in a healthy way. It can be very unhealthy to overthink. Whatever you do, take preparation seriously.
